{"id":528,"date":"2020-10-21T15:04:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-21T22:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/?p=528"},"modified":"2020-11-01T16:36:44","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T00:36:44","slug":"over-the-hill-the-end-is-in-sight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/over-the-hill-the-end-is-in-sight\/","title":{"rendered":"Over the hill the end is in sight"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>All has been swimming along quite well, until it stopped.&nbsp;&nbsp;On October 20, 2020, on the basis of a consultation with our oncologist, I sent the following note to my family and children.&nbsp;&nbsp;Just for convenience, I&#8217;m posting it here for readers of my cancerblog.  I expect this may mean more postings from me.&nbsp;&nbsp;It appears easier to write about challenges than about &#8220;swimming along&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mom and I have been busy, busy, busy over here, video conferencing with our General Practitioner, Oncologist, Pulmonary Doctor (with add-ins from Palliative Care, Radiology, our Pastor), etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To summarize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chemo:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>I have, over these last nine years, blown through all the existing accepted chemotherapeutic protocols to combat my cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;There are no more medications that can be offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clinical Trials:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>There seem to be three Clinical Trials either in startup stages, or seeking qualified candidates.&nbsp;&nbsp;All happen to be at UCSF.&nbsp;&nbsp;We\u2019re putting our name on the \u201cwaiting list\u201d to get more information.&nbsp;&nbsp;We\u2019ll see whether any are a good match; whether their likely results are worth the cost of experimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pulmonary Options:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;The Pulmonary Doctors specialize in Lung Health.&nbsp;&nbsp;They\u2019ve evaluated my CT Scans and know about my coughing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two types of bronchoscopy available to us.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Neither of these are urgent, but are available on an &#8220;as needed&#8221; basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Palliative Care:<\/strong>&nbsp;The \u201cshort\u201d of it is that we can now expect the cancer to continue encroaching on my lungs and making it increasingly difficult for me to breathe.&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s where Palliative Care comes in.&nbsp;&nbsp;They have a number of possible \u201cinterventions\u201d to help me breathe when I have difficulty.&nbsp;&nbsp;They can administer such care in the hospital or at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Death:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;Whenever THAT time comes, we WERE prepared to have a Polish Wake and Funeral Liturgy \u201cwith a cast of thousands\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;Because of the coronavirus pandemic, however, that won\u2019t be possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;No party for some time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Timeline:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;Typically after stopping chemo, patients have around 6 months.&nbsp;&nbsp;But\u2014as our oncologist pointed out\u2014I\u2019ve consistently outlasted the statistical expectation chart.&nbsp;&nbsp;We all hope this continues to be the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I share this with you because having cancer has given us the opportunity \/ necessity to plan ahead in this practical way.&nbsp;&nbsp;People approaching the end of their life without terminal illness often don\u2019t have this opportunity.&nbsp;&nbsp;They just suddenly die one day; frequently without notice.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have notice.&nbsp;&nbsp;We have a chance to think about the process as well as the end (or, actually, of course, the new beginning).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dad<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All has been swimming along quite well, until it stopped.&nbsp;&nbsp;On October 20, 2020, on the basis of a consultation with &hellip;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/over-the-hill-the-end-is-in-sight\/\">Continue reading &raquo;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[113,452,453],"class_list":["post-528","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-death","tag-end-of-life","tag-terminal"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/528","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=528"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/528\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":537,"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/528\/revisions\/537"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=528"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=528"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.grycz.us\/cancerblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=528"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
